Patio Cleaning in Esher

Why Esher patios turn green
A patio needs sun and air to dry out, and plenty of Esher gardens don't get much of either in winter. Homes along the edge of Esher Commons, around Claremont and on the wooded private roads sit under oak, beech, pine and birch. Older gardens in the conservation area often have high walls and mature trees of their own. Down at Lower Green, close to the Rivers Mole and Ember, the ground simply stays wetter.
The result is the familiar slimy green film, black lichen spots that look like dropped chewing gum, and moss in the joints. Lime trees, common on Esher Green and in the High Street area, add sticky honeydew in summer that grows black mould on any paving underneath.
West End has its own version of the problem. The village sits round a green with ponds and the trees of West End Common, so gardens of the old cottages there are often sheltered, cool and slow to dry. A patio that looks fine in July can be slick by November.

Sandstone, York stone and porcelain
Indian sandstone is the most common patio stone we see across KT10. It is soft and porous, so high pressure roughens it and opens it up to faster regrowth. York stone, often found in older gardens, is denser but just as easy to scar. Porcelain is hard and non-porous, yet algae still grips the surface texture and the grout lines.
Steam suits all of them because the heat does the work. It loosens algae, lichen and black spot from the surface and the pores without blasting, then we rinse the patio and clear the joints. You get clean stone, intact pointing and no chemical run-off into borders or lawns.
Older Esher gardens sometimes have reclaimed or worn York stone that has taken decades to get its character. We treat that gently: the aim is to remove the growth and grime, not to make old stone look brand new.

Access through Esher gardens
Getting equipment to the patio is half the planning. A Park Road terrace may have no side access at all, so we bring hoses and kit through carefully or work out another route with you. The cottages at West End often have narrow side paths, while the larger homes on Copsem Lane, Clare Hill and Esher Park Avenue usually have side gates and plenty of room.
We protect doors, thresholds and planting, keep noise down, and leave the garden as we found it, just with a clean patio. Most Esher patios are done in a single day.

Making it last
After a clean, a few easy habits help: sweep leaves off before they rot down, trim back shrubs that shade the stone, and keep gutters clear so roof water doesn't spill onto the patio. Gardens near the commons will still need a refresh every year or two.
Many customers pair the patio with the driveway, or with steps and garden walls, so the whole outside looks consistent. We can quote for everything in one visit.
We will also point out anything we notice while we are there, such as a downpipe discharging straight onto the stone or a low spot where water pools, since fixing those is often the cheapest way to keep algae down.

Patio Cleaning Esher FAQs
Answers to common questions about our exterior cleaning services. Can't see yours? Give us a call — we're always happy to help.

Is steam safe for Indian sandstone?
Yes, and safer than a pressure washer. Sandstone is soft, so we keep the pressure low and let the heat lift the growth. That keeps the surface smooth and slows regrowth.
My Esher terrace has no side access. Can you still clean the patio?
Usually. We can run hoses through the house with protection down, or find another route. We will look at it at the free quote and agree the plan with you.
How often should a patio near the commons be cleaned?
Under heavy tree cover, every one to two years keeps it safe underfoot. In sunnier open gardens it can go longer.
Do you re-point or re-grout patios?
Our service is cleaning. Steam won't wash out sound pointing, and if we find loose or missing joints we will point them out so you can decide what to do.
