What fills Esher gutters
Esher Commons is mostly woodland now, with oak, beech, birch and Scots pine, and Claremont Landscape Garden sits right beside the town. Houses on roads like Blackhills, Clare Hill and Copsem Lane are surrounded by mature trees, and in the old centre there are tall limes on Esher Green and cedars round Christ Church. Between them they drop leaves, seeds, catkins and needles for much of the year.
Pine needles are especially awkward. They knit into a mat that lets water through slowly at first, then holds it, and moss from the roof washes down to finish the job. By late autumn many gutters are full.
Older houses add their own quirks. The low-pitched slate roofs around the town centre shed water slowly, and many Victorian houses on Park Road and Wolsey Road have original or older replacement gutters, with joints that are more prone to leaking once debris holds water in them.

Signs worth acting on
Water spilling over the gutter edge in heavy rain is the obvious one. Others are green or dark streaks down render or brickwork, damp patches on inside walls, plants growing from the gutter, and downpipes that gurgle or don't run at all. On Esher's older terraces, where gutters sit close to the pavement, overspill can also splash passers-by and stain the front step.
Left alone, blocked gutters can rot fascia boards, soak walls and pointing, and on older houses let damp into the brickwork. Clearing them is quick and inexpensive by comparison.
A quick look from the garden after a downpour tells you a lot. If you can see grass or seedlings along the gutter line, or a dark tide-mark beneath a joint, the gutter is holding water and it is time for a clearance.

How we clear them
We use a high-reach gutter vacuum, which sucks the debris straight out without anyone leaning ladders against your gutters. On tall detached homes we can work from our 19-metre cherry picker, with IPAF-trained staff. We check the downpipe outlets are flowing, and we clean the fascias and soffits so the roofline looks fresh too.
At a recent Blackhills job we vacuumed the gutters straight after steam cleaning the roof and stonework, then cleaned the windows inside and out. If you are planning a roof clean, booking gutters on the same day is the sensible order.
If we find a cracked joint, a sagging bracket or a downpipe that won't clear, we will show you photos and explain what we have seen, so you can decide what to do next.

When to book
For most Esher homes, once a year in late autumn after the leaves have come down is about right. Homes right under pines or oaks may need a second visit in spring, when catkins, seeds and needles build up again.
If you are in West End or close to the commons, where the trees come right up to the houses, it is worth asking us to look again before winter sets in, as needles keep falling long after the autumn leaves.
We will tell you honestly how full your gutters were, and suggest how often your particular house is likely to need them done.

Gutter Cleaning Esher FAQs
Answers to common questions about our exterior cleaning services. Can't see yours? Give us a call — we're always happy to help.

Do you need to go on the roof to clear the gutters?
No. The gutter vacuum works from the ground with long poles, and for very tall houses we use our cherry picker. Nobody walks on your roof.
How do I know if my downpipe is blocked as well?
Water overflowing near the top of the downpipe, or a downpipe that stays dry in heavy rain, are the usual signs. We check the outlets as part of every clearance.
Can you clean the fascias and soffits too?
Yes. We clean them as part of the job so the whole roofline is tidy, which makes a big difference on white uPVC that has gone green under the trees.
Should I clear the gutters before or after a roof clean?
After. A roof clean washes moss into the gutters, so we always clear them once the roof is done, as we did on a recent job at Blackhills.
