Exterior cleaning in Thames Ditton

A village built on the Thames floodplain

Thames Ditton sits on the south bank of the Thames, looking straight across at Hampton Court Park. The ground under it is flat floodplain: river silts, sands and gravels over London Clay, with Giggs Hill Green itself a leftover piece of the old Ditton Marsh. The Rythe follows the Portsmouth Road through the village before turning north to meet the Thames near Ferry Road.

All that water close by means damp air, morning mist off the river and gardens that stay wet well into spring. On the outside of a house you see it as green algae on paving, moss on the shady side of roofs and lichen on garden walls. It isn't neglect, it's the setting, and gentle, regular cleaning keeps it in check before it starts doing damage.

Two conservation areas, lots of old materials — Thames Ditton Thames Ditton

Two conservation areas, lots of old materials

The heart of the village around the High Street, Church Walk, Ashley Road and Station Road is the Thames Ditton Conservation Area, and Giggs Hill Green has its own conservation area to the south, joined to the village by Watts Road. Between them you'll find the 13th-century St Nicholas Church, Georgian brick houses with mansard roofs, white weatherboarded cottages on the High Street with steep clay tile roofs, and around the green a lot of white render and natural slate, with handmade clay tiles on St Leonard's Cottages and orange pantiles here and there.

These are the surfaces that suffer most from heavy-handed cleaning. Old handmade tiles and soft stock brick can be scarred by a jet washer, and slate edges chip easily. Low-pressure steam lifts the growth without blasting the surface, which is exactly why we use it. If your home is listed or in either conservation area, it's worth having that conversation at the quote, and we're happy to.

Cottages, Edwardian villas and modern flats — Thames Ditton Thames Ditton

Cottages, Edwardian villas and modern flats

Thames Ditton isn't all old cottages. Ashley Road and parts of Church Walk are lined with Edwardian semis in red brick, roughcast render and tile hanging, much of the old farmland went to housing between the wars, and the former AC Cars site off the High Street is now homes and offices. There's also a good share of flats, as well as detached and semi-detached houses towards Weston Green and Giggs Hill.

That mix shapes how we work. Tall brick boundary walls along Watts Road and St Leonard's Road, white picket fences round the green and tight parking near the station all affect how we set up. Our 19-metre cherry picker lets us reach a roof from the road or drive without ladders against your walls or anyone walking on the tiles, and where it can't get in we'll tell you straight and plan around it.

Island homes and riverside gardens — Thames Ditton Thames Ditton

Island homes and riverside gardens

Thames Ditton Island has around 47 homes, most of them raised on brick piers because of flooding, reached only by the 1939 suspension footbridge. There's no vehicle access, so island work is carried in on foot and planned with care. Along the riverside, gardens running down to the water catch the worst of the damp and the leaf fall.

Streets such as River Bank, Alexandra Road and Queens Road have flooded in the past. Clear gutters and downpipes won't stop the Thames, but they do make sure roof water gets away properly in a heavy storm.

Know-How for Thames Ditton Homes

Flat, damp floodplain ground and river mist mean paving and north-facing roofs go green faster than on higher ground.

Natural slate, handmade clay tiles and pantiles all appear around Giggs Hill Green, and each needs a gentle touch.

White weatherboarding and render on older cottages mark easily, so we keep run-off and spray under control.

Big specimen trees, including holm oaks on Ashley Road and cedars around the green, keep gutters busy in autumn.

High brick boundary walls and narrow parking near the station mean we plan cherry picker access at the quote.

FAQ

Exterior Cleaning Thames Ditton FAQs

Answers to common questions about our exterior cleaning services. Can't see yours? Give us a call — we're always happy to help.

Pristine Exterior Cleaning at work
Do you clean houses in the Thames Ditton conservation areas?

Yes. We use low-pressure steam rather than high-pressure jet washing, which is far kinder to old clay tiles, slate, soft brick and render. If your home is listed, check with the council about anything beyond routine cleaning; we'll happily talk through our method with you.

Can you work on Thames Ditton Island?

The island has no vehicle access, only the footbridge, so the cherry picker can't go across. Gutters, windows, patios and some stonework can often be done with kit we carry over. We'll look at your home and tell you honestly what's practical.

How far are you from Thames Ditton?

Our base is on Walton Road in Molesey, about 10 minutes away, so Thames Ditton is very much on our patch and easy for us to reach for quotes and repeat visits.

Is it worth cleaning before or after winter near the river?

Both have their place. Gutters are best cleared after the leaves have fallen, while roof cleans can be done most of the year. Many Thames Ditton customers book a roof clean in the warmer months and a gutter clear in late autumn.
