Patio Cleaning in Hersham
Hersham gardens are often shaded by big trees or sit low towards the River Mole, so patios stay damp and turn green fast. We steam them clean, lifting algae, lichen and black spot without blasting the joints or the stone.

Shade, damp and slippery paving
A lot of Hersham's back gardens are lovely precisely because of the trees: the mature planting around the old village, the pines and oaks of Burwood Park, the woodland edges by Burhill and Whiteley. The downside is that paving under a canopy rarely dries out properly between autumn and spring. Add the river valley on the east side, around Thrupps Lane and towards the Mole meadows, and you have ideal conditions for green algae.
Once algae gets established a patio becomes slippery, especially on steps and around doors, and it traps dirt that makes the whole area look tired. Black spot lichen follows, gripping the surface in small dark dots that won't brush off. A proper clean deals with both.
Hersham South has a lot more detached houses with bigger gardens than the north of the village, and bigger gardens tend to mean bigger patios, terraces and paths. On those we often find the shaded half of a terrace is badly green while the sunny half is fine, which is a good sign the problem is moisture rather than the stone itself.

Indian sandstone, porcelain and York stone
We see every kind of paving here. Indian sandstone has been the usual choice for patios laid over the last twenty years or so, porcelain is the favourite for newer garden makeovers, and some older properties still have York stone or traditional concrete slabs. They all react differently.
Sandstone is fairly soft and porous, so it stains easily and is easily damaged by high pressure. Porcelain is hard but its smooth surface shows algae film and grime, and its narrow joints can be washed out. York stone has a natural texture we want to keep. Steam at low pressure suits all of them, cleaning deep into the surface without scarring it.
We'll check the paving type before we start, because the right temperature and approach for a soft riven sandstone isn't the same as for a smooth porcelain tile. If you're not sure what's been laid, that's fine; we'll tell you.

How a steam patio clean works
We start by moving anything you'd like moved and checking the joints. The steam is then worked across the paving section by section, lifting algae, lichen, moss and ground-in dirt. Because we're relying on heat rather than pressure, we don't strip the jointing or splash muck up the walls and windows.
Black spot lichen is the most stubborn growth and the steam loosens it far better than a garden jet wash. Heavily marked stone may need more than one pass, and we'll be honest at the quote about how much improvement to expect on very old staining. We rinse and leave the area tidy when we're finished.
If joints have already been washed out by previous jet washing, we'll point it out so you can decide whether to have them re-pointed or re-filled afterwards.

Parakeets, pines and pollen
Hersham has a well-known parakeet colony near the rugby ground on Molesey Road, and anyone with a bird table nearby will know they're not tidy guests. Bird droppings, pine needles, sap and spring pollen all stain paving and feed the growth that follows.
Seasonal debris is why many local customers book a patio clean in spring, ready for summer, rather than waiting for it to get really bad. A clean surface also makes it easier to spot loose slabs or failed joints before they become trip hazards.
Gardens backing onto woodland around Whiteley Village and Burhill tend to get the heaviest leaf fall, and leaves left lying on paving through the winter leave brown tannin stains on lighter stone. Steam lifts most of these marks, and clearing leaves off through the autumn helps stop them coming back.

Patio Cleaning Hersham FAQs
Answers to common questions about our exterior cleaning services. Can't see yours? Give us a call — we're always happy to help.

Will steam cleaning remove black spot from my sandstone patio?
Steam is very effective on black spot lichen and usually removes most or all of it. Very old, deep staining can leave faint marks, and we'll tell you honestly at the quote what to expect. Shaded patios in Hersham, especially those near trees or close to the Mole, tend to have the most black spot, so they're where steam makes the biggest difference.
Is it safe for porcelain paving?
Yes. Low-pressure steam cleans porcelain thoroughly without damaging the surface or blasting out the narrow joints.
How long does a patio clean take?
Most Hersham patios are done in a few hours to a day, depending on size and how much growth there is. The bigger terraces we see in Burwood Park and towards Burhill can take a full day, especially if steps and paths are included.
Do I need to be home?
Not necessarily, as long as we can get into the garden and have access to an outside tap. We'll agree the details with you beforehand.
How often should I have my patio cleaned?
In shaded or damp Hersham gardens, every one to two years keeps algae from building up. Sunnier, open patios can often go longer. A quick sweep to clear leaves and needles through autumn also helps the clean last longer.
Can you do my garden steps and walls too?
Yes. Steps, walls and copings can be steam cleaned at the same visit so everything matches.
