From sweeping drives to small forecourts
Driveways vary a lot across Esher. On private roads such as Blackhills, Clare Hill and Esher Park Avenue, and along Copsem Lane, houses often sit back behind long drives and turning circles, sometimes with electric gates. Around Ember Lane and the station, 1930s detached homes usually have block-paved or tarmac fronts. In the older streets near the High Street, many houses have a small forecourt or none at all.
So the size of the job, the access and where the water goes all change from road to road. We look at the drive at the quote and plan it properly, including where to park the van so neighbours on narrow roads aren't held up.
Lower Green is different again. Much of its housing went up between the wars and in the 1950s, so short block-paved or concrete drives in front of semis and terraces are typical, and the area's closeness to the Mole and Ember means shaded edges stay damp.

What leaves Esher drives grubby
Trees again play a big part. Drives that sit under oak, beech and pine near Esher Commons or the Claremont woods collect leaf litter that rots into the joints, feeding moss and weeds. Shaded areas grow green algae, and lime trees drip honeydew that leaves black stains. Add oil marks from cars, tyre scuffs and the general grime from busy roads like the Portsmouth Road and Copsem Lane, and a drive can look tired in a few years.
On block paving the joints are the weak spot. Once the sand is washed out or colonised by moss, blocks can start to move and weeds take hold.
On the long drives off Copsem Lane and round Claremont, gravel margins and planted borders wash grit and soil onto the paving every time it rains hard. It settles in the joints and the texture of the surface, and it is a big part of the grey, tired look lighter paving gets.

Steam, then re-sanding
We clean block paving, tarmac, resin, concrete and natural stone with low-pressure steam. It lifts moss, algae and dirt without ripping out joint sand, loosening resin or scarring stone the way a high-pressure lance can. Weeds and moss are cleared from the joints as we go.
On block paving we finish by brushing in kiln-dried sand to refill the joints. That locks the blocks together and makes it harder for weeds to get back in. Resin and tarmac drives just need a careful clean and rinse.
Natural stone drives, such as sandstone or granite setts on some of the larger homes, get the same gentle treatment as a patio. We avoid scarring the surface or lifting the pointing, and we rinse thoroughly so nothing is left behind on the stone.

Fitting in with neighbours and gates
Plenty of Esher roads are narrow, privately maintained or both, so we think about the neighbours as much as the drive. We park so that others can still get in and out, keep hoses tidy across pavements, and let you know roughly how long the noise will last. On private roads we work within any estate arrangements you tell us about.
Where a drive is gated, we just need the gates open or a way in on the day. We clear up as we go, so by the time we leave the drive is clean, the joints are re-sanded and there is no muck washed onto the road.

Driveway Cleaning Esher FAQs
Answers to common questions about our exterior cleaning services. Can't see yours? Give us a call — we're always happy to help.

Can you work around electric gates on a private road?
Yes. We just need the gates open or a way in on the day. On private roads we park considerately and keep to any estate arrangements.
Will cleaning loosen my block paving?
No. Steam at low pressure keeps the sand in place far better than jet washing, and we re-sand the joints with kiln-dried sand afterwards to lock the blocks together.
Can you clean a resin driveway?
Yes. Resin needs gentle treatment so the stones stay bonded, which is exactly what low-pressure steam gives. It is a common job in Esher.
How long does a large Esher drive take?
It depends on size and surface. Most are done in a day. A long drive with re-sanding may take longer, and we will give you a clear idea at the quote.
