Exterior cleaning in Hampton

A riverside village with a lot of history on its roofs

Hampton grew up along the Thames, and the old core around Thames Street, Church Street and the High Street still has buildings from the 1500s through to the 1800s. Walk it and you'll see brown and yellow stock brick, white-rendered cottages, and roofs that switch between slate and clay tile from one house to the next. There's no single pattern, which is exactly why we look at each roof before we quote rather than treating the whole village the same.

Much of this part of Hampton sits in the Hampton Village conservation area, with Garrick's Temple to Shakespeare, Garrick's Villa and St Mary's Church nearby. Whether or not your home is listed, older brick, lime-based mortar and soft render don't take kindly to a pressure washer. Low-pressure steam lifts the moss, algae and grime without blasting the surface away, and it uses no harsh chemicals near gardens that run down towards the river.

Hampton Hill, Hampton Wick and Hampton Court — Hampton Hampton

Hampton Hill, Hampton Wick and Hampton Court

Hampton Hill was open common until the 1811 enclosure and filled up in the second half of the 1800s, so it's mostly modest Victorian houses with shallow-pitched slate roofs and brick chimneystacks along the High Street, and larger detached and semi-detached villas on roads like Park Road and Edward Road. Shallow slate holds moss and lichen in the overlaps, and old chimney flaunchings often need a careful eye while we're up there.

Hampton Wick, tucked between the river, Bushy Park and Home Park, mixes clay-tiled roofs on its High Street with big hipped slate roofs on the Victorian villas of Seymour Road and Glamorgan Road. Around Hampton Court Green it's Georgian brick, painted render, slate, clay tile and some lead, behind brick walls and solid timber gates. Those front boundaries are lovely, but they make access the first thing we plan.

Bushy Park, big trees and a damp river valley — Hampton Hampton

Bushy Park, big trees and a damp river valley

Bushy Park runs along the edge of Hampton, Hampton Hill and Hampton Wick, and Hampton Court Road, Station Road and many front gardens are lined with mature trees. That means leaves and seed in the gutters every autumn, shade on north-facing roof slopes and patios, and the green algae and black spot that thrive where the sun doesn't reach.

Add the moisture coming off the Thames and the islands like Tagg's Island and Platt's Eyot, and homes close to the water stay damp for longer after rain. Steam cleaning followed by a biocide treatment on roofs slows that regrowth down, and clear gutters stop water spilling down your brickwork.

Why our cherry picker suits Hampton's streets — Hampton Hampton

Why our cherry picker suits Hampton's streets

We never walk on roof tiles or lean ladders on old slate. Our own 19m cherry picker and IPAF-trained operatives let us reach tall three-storey Georgian fronts, rear roof slopes over gardens and the gutters behind parapets safely. On streets where houses sit right on the pavement edge, like parts of Thames Street or Hampton Wick High Street, we check positioning in advance so the job runs smoothly for you and your neighbours.

Know-How for Hampton Homes

Mixed slate and clay tile roofs in Hampton Village mean each roof gets assessed on its own merits before cleaning.

Shallow-pitched slate in Hampton Hill traps moss in the laps, so gentle steam is safer than scraping.

Stock brick, lime mortar and white render on older homes are easily damaged by high pressure.

Mature trees along Hampton Court Road, Station Road and the Bushy Park edge fill gutters and shade patios.

Riverside damp near the Thames and its islands encourages algae, lichen and black spot on paving.

1970s and 80s homes at Nurserylands tend to have block paving and modern roof coverings that suit a deep clean and re-sand.

Exterior Cleaning Hampton FAQs

Pristine Exterior Cleaning at work
Do you really cover Hampton from Molesey?

Yes. Our base on Walton Road is about ten minutes away over Hampton Court Bridge, and we work across Hampton, Hampton Hill, Hampton Wick and the Hampton Court side regularly.

My house is in the Hampton Village conservation area. Is steam cleaning suitable?

Steam is the gentle option. It works at low pressure and without harsh chemicals, so it's well suited to older brick, render and slate. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, it's worth checking with the council about anything beyond routine cleaning, but a careful clean is exactly what these buildings need.

Can your cherry picker reach houses on narrow streets?

In most cases, yes. We look at the street, the front boundary and the rear access before the day, so we know where the machine will sit. Tall Georgian fronts and rear slopes over long gardens are where it really earns its keep.

We back onto Bushy Park. How often should our gutters be cleared?

Homes next to the park or under big street trees usually benefit from a clear-out every autumn, sometimes twice a year. We vacuum them from the ground with a high-reach system and can clean the fascias and soffits at the same visit.

Can you do everything in one visit?

Yes. Lots of people book a roof clean with gutters, windows, patio and driveway together, which saves you arranging several trades and means everything finishes looking consistent.
