Exterior cleaning in Walton-on-Thames

A town shaped by the river and the reservoirs

Walton sits on the south bank of the Thames, with the River Mole marking its eastern edge and the Queen Elizabeth II Reservoir and its neighbours spread out towards Molesey. All that open water is lovely to live beside, but it means plenty of homes here stay damp for longer after rain, especially on north-facing roof slopes, shaded patios and the back gardens that run down towards the towpath and Cowey Sale.

Damp plus shade is exactly what moss, algae and lichen want. Add the mature broadleaf trees that line Sidney Road, fill the gardens around Rydens and stand along the old Ashley Park boundaries, and you get roofs that green over, gutters that fill with leaves every autumn and paving that turns slippery by November. Most of what we do in Walton is putting that right, gently, and slowing down how fast it comes back.

Old Walton, the town centre and the Victorian streets — Walton-on-Thames Walton-on-Thames

Old Walton, the town centre and the Victorian streets

The oldest part of town, around St Mary's Church, Church Street, Bridge Street and down Manor Road to the riverside, is covered by two conservation areas. Roofs here are mostly steep clay tiles, some of them old handmade tiles with an uneven profile, with natural slate on Thames Street and a fair few concrete interlocking replacements along Manor Road. Walls are red and buff stock brick, painted brick and render, with brick-and-flint garden walls in places.

North of Terrace Road, around Russell Road and Sunbury Lane, the houses are late Victorian: mostly semis with gables to the street and bay windows on the ground floor. These homes are the reason we don't use pressure washers. Old tiles, soft brick and lime-based mortar don't respond well to a lance, so we use low-pressure steam that lifts the growth without blasting the surface. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, that gentle approach matters even more.

Ashley Park, Sidney Road and the larger detached homes — Walton-on-Thames Walton-on-Thames

Ashley Park, Sidney Road and the larger detached homes

Ashley Park was laid out on the grounds of the old Ashley House, with half-acre plots sold from the 1930s and covenants that kept things detached and low density. The older houses lean towards Arts and Crafts, with faux timber framing, projecting gables and long catslide roofs, and many have since been rebuilt as large contemporary homes. Mature trees, deep front gardens and long driveways are the norm, and because the later roads were never adopted, pavements are limited.

Around Sidney Road and Bowes Road you'll find early twentieth-century detached houses of two to two-and-a-half storeys, set back behind landscaped boundaries with driveways, bays and porches. These are big roofs, tall gutters and wide expanses of paving, and they're where our 19m cherry picker earns its keep. We can reach over a front garden or along the side of a house without ladders on the roof or anyone walking on the tiles.

Field Common, Rydens and Walton's post-war streets — Walton-on-Thames Walton-on-Thames

Field Common, Rydens and Walton's post-war streets

A lot of Walton was built between the wars and after 1945. Around Field Common Lane and Oakbank Avenue the Homefield area is mostly two-storey semis around shared green spaces, while the streets off Cottimore Lane and St Johns Drive are inter-war and post-war houses on small plots, many of them with front gardens turned over to parking. Rydens has one of the biggest clusters of bungalows and chalet-style houses in Elmbridge, around Crofton Avenue and Shaldon Way.

These homes need something a bit different. Concrete roof tiles on a 1950s semi collect moss in thick cushions that wash straight into the gutters. Chalet roofs with dormers have awkward valleys and lots of window frames at roof height. Front driveways on Carlton Road and similar streets take daily car traffic and oil drips. We price and plan each job on what's actually there rather than a one-size-fits-all package.

Why we're in Walton so often — Walton-on-Thames Walton-on-Thames

Why we're in Walton so often

Walton-on-Thames, along with Hersham, Cobham and Oxshott, is where much of our work is. It's roughly ten minutes from our yard on Walton Road in Molesey, so getting the cherry picker and steam units here is easy, and we can often fit in a quick follow-up visit if something needs another look.

A recent Walton job is a good example of how we tend to work: a full roof steam clean and biocide treatment, followed by a deep clean of the patio and driveway, so the whole outside of the house matched once we'd finished. We've been doing this for more than 21 years, we're fully insured, and every quote is free and comes with no obligation.

Know-How for Walton-on-Thames Homes

Old Walton's conservation areas have steep clay tile roofs, some handmade, so we steam clean at low pressure rather than jet washing.

Homes near the Thames, the River Mole and the reservoirs dry out slowly after rain, which speeds up moss and algae on roofs and paving.

Ashley Park and Sidney Road have large detached houses set well back behind mature trees, so our 19m cherry picker gives safe reach without ladders.

Rydens has a large number of bungalows and chalet-style homes, with dormers and valleys that trap moss and debris.

Many front gardens around Cottimore Lane and Carlton Road are now driveways, which pick up oil, tyre marks and weeds in the joints.

Horse chestnuts, cedars and broadleaf trees around the town drop leaves and debris that block gutters each autumn.

Pristine Exterior Cleaning at work
Do you cover all of Walton-on-Thames?

Yes. We work across KT12, from Old Walton and the riverside down through the town centre, Ashley Park, Sidney Road, Field Common, Rydens and the streets off Cottimore Lane. We also cover Hersham, Weybridge and Molesey.

Can you work on a house in Ashley Park with a long driveway?

Usually, yes. The cherry picker needs a firm, level spot to set up, and a long drive often gives us better access than a tight terrace. We'll look at the access when we come out to quote.

My house is in the Old Walton conservation area. Is steam cleaning suitable?

It's the method we'd choose. Low-pressure steam lifts moss, algae and grime without blasting old clay tiles, soft brick or mortar. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, gentle methods like this make sense.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes, and many Walton customers do. A typical combination is a roof clean and treatment followed by the patio and driveway, with the gutters cleared and windows washed at the end so everything is finished at once.

How quickly can you get to Walton?

Our base on Walton Road, Molesey is about ten minutes away, so we're in Walton most weeks. Get in touch for a free quote and we'll arrange a time that suits you.
