Stonework Cleaning in Claygate

The brick that built Claygate

Brick was made here for centuries. Brickfields worked on the site of Kilnside and Fishersdene and either side of Oaken Lane, local brick went into the station and the bridge at the end of Claremont Road, and Claygate Fireplaces made its thin, hand-made bricks at the Common Road pit from 1922 until 1964. Glenavon House on Common Road, the firm's old office, still shows off decorative brickwork.

Many Victorian and Edwardian homes in the village are built from soft, handmade or locally fired brick. Those bricks have a thin, harder outer skin. A pressure washer can strip it in seconds, leaving the brick dusty and porous so it soaks up water, goes green faster and can spall in a frost. Steam cleans the face without removing it.

Porches, steps and garden walls on the Foley Estate — Stonework Cleaning Claygate Stonework Cleaning · Claygate

Porches, steps and garden walls on the Foley Estate

The Foley Estate conservation area is known for Arts and Crafts detail, and that brings plenty to clean: brick and stone porches, decorative window heads and sills, tiled or stone steps, garden walls with copings and piers, and the odd balustrade or column on the grander houses. Up on Ruxley Ridge, newer large homes often have stone porticos, balconies and pool surrounds that pick up green algae under the trees.

We steam each surface at the temperature and pressure it can take, working on brick, natural stone, reconstituted stone and render. Painted or rendered fronts can be cleaned too, which is often all a tired-looking house needs.

What a restoration involves — Stonework Cleaning Claygate Stonework Cleaning · Claygate

What a restoration involves

We start by looking at what's actually on the surface. On Claygate walls that's usually green algae on the shady side, black lichen spots, moss on copings and caps, and grime splashed up from paths and drives. Clay soil keeps the bottom courses of a wall damp, so the base of a garden wall is often the worst part.

The steam softens and lifts all of that without harsh chemicals, which matters with flower beds, hedges and ponds right up against the stonework. For high details such as chimney stacks, gable ends and balconies we can work from our 19-metre cherry picker instead of ladders.

We work section by section, rinsing as we go so the run-off stays clean, and we finish by checking the joints and edges. Where we find loose pointing, spalled brick or a cracked coping, we point it out so you can decide what to do next, rather than hiding it under a clean finish.

Why we won't jet wash a Claygate wall — Stonework Cleaning Claygate Stonework Cleaning · Claygate

Why we won't jet wash a Claygate wall

We're often asked to clean brick that someone has already pressure washed in the past. It's usually easy to spot: the face of the brick is rough and sandy, the mortar has been chased out of the joints, and the wall has gone green again far quicker than before. Once that outer skin has gone it can't be put back, so the wall takes on more water and stays damp for longer, especially low down where it meets the clay.

Steam gets a strong result without that cost. It's slower than a jet washer, but on a village where so many homes are built from soft local brick, and where two conservation areas protect the look of the streets, we think it's the only sensible way to do it.

If your house has a mix of brick, stone dressings and render, we'll explain at the quote how each will be handled, so there are no surprises on the day.

Pristine Exterior Cleaning at work
Is steam safe on old Claygate brick?

Yes. It's the main reason we use it. Low pressure and heat lift dirt, algae and lichen without stripping the brick's outer skin or blowing out the mortar joints, which is what tends to happen with a jet washer.

Do you use chemicals on stonework?

No. Our stone restoration is chemical-free. That's kinder to the surface and to the plants, lawns and wildlife right next to it, which matters in gardens that back onto Claygate Common or have ponds and borders against the walls.

Can you clean render as well as brick?

Yes. We steam clean rendered and painted fronts, porches, walls and garden features as well as brick and natural stone. We'll look at the condition first and tell you what result to expect.

My house is on the Local List or in a conservation area. Is that a problem?

Gentle, chemical-free cleaning suits older and locally valued buildings well. If you're unsure what applies to your home, check with Elmbridge Borough Council; we're happy to work to their advice.
