Front gardens that became driveways
Most of Claygate was laid out before the car, from Foley's 1885 plots to the Edwardian houses along Coverts Road. Over the years many front gardens have become parking, so a lot of village drives are block paving or tarmac squeezed in between old brick walls, hedges and gate piers. Homes from the 1920s and 1930s along Fee Farm Road and Arbrook Lane often have concrete or slab drives, and the larger and newer houses have resin, natural stone or wide block-paved areas.

Moss in the joints and weeds at the edges
Clay ground holds moisture right up to the edges of a drive, so weeds and moss grow fast in the joints and along the borders, particularly where the drive meets a lawn or hedge.
