Mock Tudor fronts and what goes wrong with them
G.T. Crouch, who built much of Hinchley Wood, liked a Tudor look: brick lower walls, with gables above in painted timber boards set into render. Plenty of houses in the area follow the same idea, and a lot of owners have painted or re-rendered over the years. It's a handsome front when it's clean, and a tired one when it isn't.
The common faults are easy to spot. Render panels go green or grey below the gables and on the shaded side. Black streaks run down from window sills and roof edges. The white paint on the timbers turns dull, and lichen sits in the corners. On houses close to the bypass a grey traffic film settles over the lot.
Because so many houses along a road were built to the same pattern, a stained front is very noticeable next to a neighbour's freshly painted one. Cleaning first is also the right start if you're planning to repaint: paint goes on better and lasts longer on a clean, dry surface than over a layer of algae.

Low-pressure steam instead of a jet washer
A pressure washer will make render look clean for a week, but it can strip paint, open hairline cracks, push water behind the panels and gouge soft mortar out of the brick joints. On a ninety-year-old front that sort of damage is easy to do and slow to put right.
Steam cleans by heat rather than force. It softens algae, lichen and grime so they can be rinsed away at low pressure, and it doesn't need harsh chemicals. We can turn it right down for painted timber and old render and use more heat on hard surfaces like brick plinths, steps and copings.
We also think about where the water goes. Older houses here have air bricks low in the walls and timber thresholds at the doors, so we keep the flow down and work away from them.
