Stonework Cleaning in Esher

Render, stucco and stone around KT10

In the old town, brick is often painted or rendered, and the council's appraisal mentions stucco window surrounds and even knapped flint walls with yellow brick dressings on part of the High Street. Christ Church is built of buff rubble stone. Those older finishes pick up traffic grime from the Portsmouth Road and green algae on any face that misses the sun.

Out on the private roads, the stone work is different in kind. Homes around Clare Hill, Blackhills and Copsem Lane often have porticos and columns at the front door, stone steps, balustraded terraces, wall copings and pool surrounds. Pale stone shows every streak, and under the trees near the commons it turns green within a few seasons.

Then there are the town's historic buildings to set the tone: St George's Church, the Grade I listed sixteenth-century church off Church Street, and the brick gatehouse of Waynflete's Tower down by Esher Place. You won't have us cleaning those, but the houses around them were built in the same spirit and deserve the same care.

Heat, not force

Natural stone and old render are porous. A high-pressure jet washer drives water deep into them, cuts into the surface and can blow out soft lime pointing, leaving stone rougher and quicker to go green again. Abrasive blasting is worse still on carved detail. Our steam works at low pressure and high temperature, so moss, algae, lichen and grime are loosened and rinsed away while the face of the stone stays intact.

It is also chemical-free, which matters around planted borders and lawns, and on homes where water runs off towards garden ponds. For houses in the Esher or West End conservation areas, or anything listed, a gentle approach is the sensible starting point, and we will always talk you through what we plan to do first.

A Blackhills house, top to bottom

On a recent job at Blackhills, a private road next to the Claremont landscape gardens, we steam cleaned both the roof and the stonework, then applied biocide. Our 19-metre cherry picker let us reach high stone details safely without scaffolding or ladders against the walls. The gutters were vacuumed out and the windows cleaned inside and out to finish.

Doing stone and roof together makes sense on Esher's bigger houses. The access is already there, run-off from the roof doesn't streak freshly cleaned stone, and the whole front looks consistent at the end rather than one bright element against a dull one.

Steps, walls and pool surrounds

Not all stonework is up high. Front steps and garden walls on Esher's older roads, and pool surrounds and terrace balustrades behind the larger detached homes, pick up algae and black spot that make them look tired and, on steps, slippery. Steam reaches into the joints and texture without lifting the pointing.

Garden walls are a particular case in the older parts of town, where brick boundary walls with stone or brick copings are common. The copings take the worst of the weather and hold moss along the top; steam clears it without loosening the mortar beneath.

Once clean, the best way to keep stone that way is simple: cut back overhanging shrubs, keep gutters flowing so they don't overspill down walls, and book a light clean every few years before the growth gets established.

Pristine Exterior Cleaning at work
Can you clean stone on a house in the Esher conservation area?

Yes. Steam is one of the gentlest ways to clean old stone and render. If your home is listed, or you plan anything beyond routine cleaning, check with Elmbridge first; we are happy to explain our method to them.

Will steam remove black spot from my stone terrace?

Steam lifts most black spot and lichen well. Very old, deep-set staining may fade rather than vanish completely, and we will tell you honestly at the quote what to expect.

Do you clean painted render?

Yes, at low pressure so the paint stays put. We test a small area first. Flaking or failing paint will show up after cleaning, but steam won't strip sound paint.

How do you reach high columns and copings?

With our own 19-metre cherry picker, operated by IPAF-trained staff. It is how we cleaned the high stonework on a Blackhills home without scaffolding.
