Exterior cleaning in Claygate

A village that gave its name to the clay

Geologists call the top layer of the London Clay the Claygate Beds, after this village, and it sits up to fifteen metres thick under most KT10 gardens, with sandier ground towards the south of the parish. The clay was dug for bricks for centuries. There were brickfields where Kilnside and Fishersdene now stand and either side of Oaken Lane, Claygate bricks are said to have gone into repairs at Hampton Court Palace, and the Claygate Fireplaces works on Common Road turned out its thin hand-made bricks until 1964.

That history is still on the houses. Plenty of Claygate homes are built of soft local brick, and a few roads, including Torrington Road, Foley Road, Meadow Road and Dalmore Avenue, still have brick pavements laid between the wars. Soft, old brick is exactly the material a jet washer ruins, which is a big part of why we use low-pressure steam here.

Victorian plots, Edwardian villas and later infill — Claygate Claygate

Victorian plots, Edwardian villas and later infill

Most of today's Claygate arrived in the sixty years after the railway opened in 1885. That year Fitzalan Foley divided his land into 258 building plots, and the roads he laid out became what is now the Claygate Foley Estate conservation area, known for large Victorian and Edwardian detached and semi-detached houses with Arts and Crafts detailing. Coverts Road filled up between 1885 and the First World War, Fee Farm Road was built from 1920, the Arbrook Lane houses date from the early 1930s and Blakeden Road from the 1960s.

Add newer homes on split plots and a few far older farmhouses, and one Claygate road can mix steep tiled roofs, painted bays, block-paved drives and porcelain terraces. We look at each house before we quote.

The Green, the Parade and Ruxley Ridge — Claygate Claygate

The Green, the Parade and Ruxley Ridge

The old heart of the village is The Green, a conservation area in its own right, with Holy Trinity Church of 1840, the 1880s Sims and Sydney Cottages, the drinking fountain Lord Foley gave in 1893 and oak and ash trees planted for Queen Victoria's jubilees. The Parade, running from the station towards Hare Lane, still has its 1890s shopfronts. Up the hill, Lord Foley's Ruxley Lodge became the Neo-Gothic Ruxley Towers, now luxury homes, and the roads around Ruxley Ridge hold some of the largest houses in Claygate.

Each asks for something different: a light touch on older and listed buildings, tidy working on narrow roads near the shops, and real reach for tall houses behind long gardens, which our 19-metre cherry picker gives us without ladders on roofs.

Woods, wet ground and slow-drying surfaces — Claygate Claygate

Woods, wet ground and slow-drying surfaces

Claygate Common, a local nature reserve of oak, beech and hornbeam, sits on the village's edge, with Arbrook Common beyond and Telegraph Hill and Winney Hill to the south. Three headwaters of the Rythe rise here, and because clay holds water, lawns, patios and drive edges dry slowly and stay green for longer.

The result is what you'd expect: moss on shaded roofs, algae on paving, lichen on walls and gutters full of leaves each autumn. Steam lifts all of it by heat rather than force, without harsh chemicals running into the borders or the ditches.

Know-How for Claygate Homes

Much of Claygate sits on the Claygate Beds clay, which drains slowly, so patios and drives near lawns stay damp and green up quickly.

Older houses often use soft local brick; high pressure scours the face and blows out mortar, so we steam instead.

Two conservation areas, Claygate Village around The Green and the Foley Estate, mean gentle methods matter on many homes.

Oak, beech and hornbeam on and around Claygate Common drop leaves and seed into gutters each autumn.

Tall Victorian and Edwardian roofs and big houses near Ruxley Ridge are easiest and safest to reach from our cherry picker.

Pristine Exterior Cleaning at work
Do you cover all of Claygate?

Yes. We work across the KT10 side of Claygate regularly, from The Green and the Foley Estate to Ruxley Ridge, Oaken Lane, Telegraph Lane and the roads towards Hinchley Wood and Esher. We're roughly 15 to 20 minutes away in Molesey.

My house is in the Foley Estate conservation area. Is steam cleaning suitable?

It's the method we'd choose. Low-pressure steam cleans without blasting brick, tiles or pointing and without harsh chemicals, so it suits older, decorative houses. If you have any doubts about what your home's status allows, it's worth checking with Elmbridge Borough Council first; we're happy to work to whatever they advise.

Why does my Claygate patio go green so quickly?

Usually it's the clay. The ground under much of the village holds water, so paving beside lawns and borders rarely dries out fully, and shade from mature trees makes it worse. Steam clears the algae and black spot, and we can talk you through simple ways to slow its return.

Can you reach a tall house set well back from the road?

In most cases, yes. Our 19-metre cherry picker can reach high ridges and over front gardens, so we don't need ladders against the walls or anyone walking on the roof. We check access, gates and parking at the free quote.
