Soft brick, flint and stucco in the old town
Much of the character of Chalk Lane, Woodcote and Stamford Green comes from its masonry. Local soft red brick, often laid with blue headers in a chequer pattern, makes up house fronts and the tall boundary walls that line the lanes. Several big houses are finished in white stucco, and flint turns up in garden walls around Stamford Green and College Road and in the walls of Christ Church. The boundary wall at The Durdans even uses clunch, which is chalk cut into blocks.
These materials are soft and porous. Algae and black staining settle into them easily, especially on walls shaded by mature trees, but they are also easy to damage. Strong acids and high-pressure jets can erode brick faces, wash out lime mortar and leave stucco patchy.

How steam restoration works
We use low-pressure steam rather than force or chemicals. The heat breaks down organic growth and loosens dirt, which is then rinsed away gently. Because there are no harsh chemicals, there is nothing to soak into porous stone or brick and nothing to run off into the garden or ponds.
For bigger houses we work from our 19m cherry picker, so high gables, chimneys and parapets can be cleaned without scaffolding. That is useful on the larger Georgian and Victorian homes around Woodcote and the Downs where the stonework goes right up to the roofline.

Tall boundary walls along the lanes
One of the things that makes old Epsom feel the way it does is its walls. Around Chalk Lane and Woodcote End, high brick walls, some more than three metres tall and many of them listed, run along the lanes and enclose the grounds of the big houses. Madans Walk runs between two of them. Being shaded by mature trees on one side and the lane on the other, they rarely see much sun and gather algae and grime.
We clean garden and boundary walls of all sizes, including the coping and brick-and-tile capping along the top, which is where water sits longest. From the cherry picker we can reach the top of a tall wall without leaning anything against it.

Porticos, steps, walls and render
Stonework is not just the front of the house. We restore porticos and columns, balustrades, balconies, copings, steps, garden walls and pool surrounds. Rendered walls are a big part of the work too, from painted stucco on Georgian fronts to roughcast on Arts and Crafts houses along Burgh Heath Road.
Newer homes at Horton and Langley Vale often have reconstituted stone sills, porch canopies and coping stones that turn grey and green after 15 or 20 years. They come back up well with steam and usually look close to new.

Stonework Cleaning Epsom FAQs
Answers to common questions about our exterior cleaning services. Can't see yours? Give us a call — we're always happy to help.

Will steam damage lime mortar or old brick?
No. It is low pressure and relies on heat, so it does not blast mortar out of joints or erode the face of soft brick. That is why we use it on older Epsom properties rather than a pressure washer.
My home is listed. Can you still clean the stonework?
We clean listed and conservation-area homes with exactly the same gentle method. If you are unsure whether any works need consent, it is worth a quick check with Epsom and Ewell's planning team, but a chemical-free steam clean is about as light-touch as cleaning gets.
Can you clean painted render?
Yes. Steam lifts algae and dirt from painted render and stucco without the harshness of chemicals. If paint is already flaking, we will tell you before we start.
Do you clean garden walls and steps as well as the house?
Yes. Boundary walls, steps, terraces, copings and pool surrounds are all part of stonework restoration, and we often do them alongside a patio clean.
