The masonry that gives Walton its look
Walk down Church Street and Bridge Street and you'll see red and buff stock brick, painted brick, render and, at St Mary's, flint with stone dressings. Garden boundaries in the conservation area are often low brick walls in Flemish or English garden wall bond, with brick-and-flint walls here and there. Older houses along Sidney Road and in Ashley Park add porches, stone steps, sills and copings, and many of the larger modern houses have rendered walls, columns, balustrades and terrace walls.
All of it weathers. Walls and copings under trees pick up green algae, the shady side of a porch goes black, and render streaks under every sill. It's easy to stop noticing it day to day, but cleaned stonework often makes more difference to the look of a Walton house than anything else we do.

Why we use steam on old brick, stone and render
Old brick and lime mortar are soft. Pressure washing them can wash out joints, pit the face of the brick and drive water into the wall, which then has to dry out again. Strong chemical cleaners can leave salts and marks behind. Low-pressure steam avoids both problems: heat does the work, softening algae, lichen and dirt so it rinses away without force.
That makes it well suited to the historic parts of Walton, where buildings date from the seventeenth century onwards and boundary walls are part of the conservation area's character. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, a gentle method like this matters, and we're happy to talk through what we plan to do before we start.

Porches, columns and balconies on bigger homes
Many of the large detached houses in Ashley Park and around Sidney Road have entrance porches, porticos or columns, and some of the newer rebuilds have stone or rendered balconies and balustrades at first-floor level. These pick up dark staining from overhanging trees and rain run-off, especially on the north side of the house.
Balconies and high copings are where our 19m cherry picker helps. We can reach upper-floor stonework and render without scaffold or ladders, and work steadily along a balustrade without anyone standing on it. Steps, paths and pool surrounds at ground level are cleaned the same way, with steam that won't etch or bleach the stone.

Riverside walls, steps and render
Properties near the river around Manor Road, Thames Street and the stretch towards Cowey Sale live with more damp than most, and it shows on garden walls, steps and render. Algae can make steps genuinely slippery, and rendered walls facing the river often carry long green streaks.
We steam the growth off, rinse down, and leave the surface clean without the patchiness you sometimes get from chemical washes. For render, low pressure is important: it removes the staining without breaking the surface or loosening paint on painted render.
It's worth looking at the base of walls, too. Where a wall meets a lawn or flower bed, splashback and damp soil keep the bottom few courses wet, and that band is usually the greenest part. We take extra time along those lower courses so the wall comes up an even colour from top to bottom.

Terraces, pool surrounds and garden steps in Ashley Park
Ashley Park was sold off in half-acre plots from the 1930s, and the gardens are still generous. Some have raised terraces with stone or rendered retaining walls, flights of steps down to the lawn and, in a few cases, a pool with a stone or porcelain surround. With so many mature trees kept from the old parkland, those surfaces sit in shade for much of the day and pick up algae, leaf stains and black marks.
Pool surrounds need particular care. Anything that runs off into the water matters, so we keep to steam rather than chemical cleaners. Copings around the pool edge, step treads and the tops of terrace walls are cleaned carefully by hand-held lance, then rinsed down. Lichen on older stone can take a little longer to shift, and we'd rather tell you that up front than promise an instant result.
The same goes for the larger houses off Sidney Road and Bowes Road, where entrance steps and front walls are the first thing visitors see. A clean set of steps and a crisp front wall makes a bigger difference than people expect.

Stonework Cleaning Walton-on-Thames FAQs
Answers to common questions about our exterior cleaning services. Can't see yours? Give us a call — we're always happy to help.

Is steam safe on old brickwork in Walton's conservation areas?
Yes. It's low pressure, so it won't wash out lime mortar or damage the face of soft bricks. That's why we use it on older properties around Church Street, Bridge Street and Manor Road.
Do you use chemicals on stonework?
No harsh chemicals. The cleaning is done with steam. That's better for old stone, nearby planting and anywhere close to the river.
Can you clean render as well as stone?
Yes. We clean render at low pressure so the surface isn't broken up. It works well on the long green streaks you often see on Walton-on-Thames homes that face the river or sit under trees.
How do you reach first-floor balconies?
With our 19m cherry picker, operated by IPAF-trained staff. There's no need for scaffolding, and nobody needs to stand on the balcony or balustrade while we clean it.
Can you do the patio and driveway at the same time?
Yes. Many Walton customers have stonework, patio and driveway done together so everything matches when we leave.
Can you clean around a swimming pool?
Yes. We clean pool surrounds and copings with steam rather than chemicals, which is the sensible choice next to the water. Larger Ashley Park gardens are where we see most of these in Walton-on-Thames.
