Exterior cleaning in Kingston

A riverside town with very different streets

Kingston grew up around the first Thames crossing above London Bridge, and you can still read its history in the housing. Around the Old Town and the Ancient Market Place you have old buildings packed tightly together, often with shops below and flats above. Step out to Fairfield and Knights Park and the streets turn into the villas and terraces that went up in the 1860s and 1870s, after Kingston station opened in 1863. Further east, Norbiton and the Park Road area are mostly Victorian and Edwardian family houses.

Climb the hill and it changes again. Kingston Hill, Coombe and Kingston Vale are low-density and green, with large detached houses set back behind walls and gates, many of them backing on to Richmond Park or the Coombe Wood and Coombe Hill golf courses. Each of these areas needs a slightly different approach, and that is how we plan every Kingston job.

Why Kingston homes go green so quickly — Kingston Kingston

Why Kingston homes go green so quickly

Two things work against the outside of a Kingston home: water and trees. The Thames and the Hogsmill keep the low-lying streets near the river damp for much of the year, and north-facing roof slopes and shaded patios rarely dry out properly between October and April. That is ideal for algae, moss and black spot lichen.

Up on Kingston Hill and in Coombe the problem is shade. The council describes these areas as a woodland setting, and the mature oaks and other big trees that make them so pleasant also drop leaves, twigs and seed into gutters and onto roofs every autumn, and keep surfaces in shadow all summer. Moss holds that moisture against tiles and paving, which is why cleaning and treating it properly matters more here than on an open, sunny street.

Gentle methods for period and conservation-area homes — Kingston Kingston

Gentle methods for period and conservation-area homes

The Royal Borough has more than two dozen conservation areas, and a good number are in and around Kingston itself, including Kingston Old Town, Fairfield/Knight's Park, Park Road, Kingston Hill, Coombe Wood and Coombe Hill. Homes in these areas have details worth protecting: decorative brickwork, tile hanging, stone dressings, old boundary walls and gate piers.

We use low-pressure steam, not a high-pressure jet, so mortar, soft brick and old stone are not blasted away. Roofs are cleaned from our own 19m cherry picker, so nobody walks on your tiles or leans a ladder against a fragile gutter. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, that gentle approach is the sensible one.

Getting to you, whatever the access — Kingston Kingston

Getting to you, whatever the access

We come over from Molesey via Hampton Court, so Kingston is a short trip for us and we work right across the town. Tight Victorian streets around Canbury and Norbiton can mean limited parking, and the private roads in Coombe often have gates and long drives. Tell us about access when you ask for a quote and we will plan the vehicle, the cherry picker and the timing around it.

Know-How for Kingston Homes

Victorian villas and terraces around Fairfield, Knights Park and Park Road date mostly from the 1860s to 1890s, so mortar, brick and roof details need a gentle touch.

Kingston Hill, Coombe and Kingston Vale sit among mature trees beside Richmond Park, so gutters fill quickly and shaded roofs grow thick moss.

Streets near the Thames and the Hogsmill stay damp through winter, which feeds green algae on patios, paths and north-facing walls.

Many large Coombe houses use red brick, tile hanging and stone dressings, all of which can be steam cleaned without harsh chemicals.

Private roads and gated drives in Coombe mean access needs planning before we arrive.

Pristine Exterior Cleaning at work
Do you cover all of Kingston upon Thames?

Yes. We work across KT1 and KT2, including the Old Town, Canbury, Norbiton, Fairfield, Kingston Hill, Coombe and Kingston Vale, and we regularly go on to Surbiton too. It is a short drive from our Molesey base.

My house is in a Kingston conservation area. Is steam cleaning safe for it?

Low-pressure steam is about the gentlest effective way to clean old brick, stone and roof coverings. It lifts dirt and growth without the force of a pressure washer or harsh chemicals. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, we are happy to talk through the method first.

Our house backs on to Richmond Park. How often should the gutters be cleared?

Homes beside the park or the golf courses usually need clearing at least once a year, ideally after the main leaf fall in late autumn. Very tree-heavy plots in Coombe or on Kingston Hill can benefit from twice a year.

Can you reach a roof on a narrow terraced street in Norbiton or Canbury?

Usually, yes. Our 19m cherry picker can reach over front gardens and parked cars, and we will look at access when we quote. If a street is especially tight, we will tell you honestly what is possible.
