Exterior Cleaning in Fetcham

Fetcham sits between the River Mole and the lower slopes of the North Downs, and its homes get a bit of everything the valley throws at them: shade from big old trees, damp from the clay on the northern side and leaf fall from Bookham Common. We steam clean roofs, stonework, patios and driveways, clear gutters and clean windows right across the village, without harsh chemicals or high pressure.

Exterior cleaning in Fetcham

A village that grew up between the wars

Fetcham was a small parish of a few hundred people for most of its history. Then it grew quickly: around 1,300 residents in 1931 and over 7,300 by the early 1970s. A new classroom block went up at the village school in 1936 simply to keep up with the house building. Most of the homes you see along Cobham Road, Cock Lane, Bell Lane and the roads off them come from that long run of interwar and post-war development.

That matters for cleaning. Many Fetcham roofs, patios and driveways are now fifty to ninety years old, and plenty have never had a proper clean. Moss has built up between tiles, old paving has gone dark with lichen and gutters have quietly filled with leaves. Most of it lifts with patient, low-pressure steam rather than anything aggressive.

Chalk, clay and the Mole — Fetcham Fetcham

Chalk, clay and the Mole

The ground under Fetcham changes as you walk through it. The southern side climbs onto the chalk of Fetcham Downs, while the northern part and the eastern edge by the river sit on London Clay and river alluvium. Clay holds water, so gardens towards Bookham Common and down by the Mole tend to stay damp for longer after rain, and that is exactly where patios turn green and slippery first.

Fetcham's Mill Pond springs are chalk springs that still supply much of the area's tap water. Chalk water is hard, and hard water dries to white spots on glass. It is one of the reasons we clean windows with purified water rather than anything from the tap.

Tall trees, deep verges and big gardens — Fetcham Fetcham

Tall trees, deep verges and big gardens

Some of Fetcham's roads are defined by their greenery. Houses along Hawk's Hill and Guildford Road sit back behind wide grass verges and tall established trees. Rookery Drive is lined with large, individually designed houses screened by mature trees and hedges, and The Mount has its own hedge and shrub boundaries. It is lovely to live with, but it means shade on roofs, leaves in gutters and drip stains on drives.

Our own 19m cherry picker lets IPAF-trained operatives reach roofs and gutters from the drive without ladders against the walls or anyone walking on the tiles. We plan the set-up before we arrive so verges, lawns and borders are left as we found them.

Older homes and the conservation area — Fetcham Fetcham

Older homes and the conservation area

Around St Mary's Church and the Grade II* listed Fetcham Park House is the compact Fetcham Conservation Area, with older buildings such as Ballands Hall and The Salt Box, and period homes along The Old Street. Old brick, soft stone and handmade tiles do not respond well to pressure washers or strong chemicals.

If your home is listed or in the conservation area, gentle methods matter. Low-pressure steam lifts dirt and growth without blasting the surface away, which is why it is our main method on every job, old or new.

Know-How for Fetcham Homes

Most Fetcham homes are detached or semi-detached and date from the 1930s onwards, so many roofs and patios are carrying decades of moss and lichen.

London Clay on the northern side towards Bookham Common keeps gardens damp, which speeds up green algae on paving and render.

Tree-lined roads such as Hawk's Hill, Guildford Road and Rookery Drive mean heavy leaf fall in gutters and shaded, slow-drying roof slopes.

Local tap water comes from chalk springs and is hard, so purified water is the way to get streak-free windows.

The Fetcham Conservation Area around St Mary's Church has listed and period buildings that need gentle, chemical-free cleaning.

Pristine Exterior Cleaning at work
Do you cover the whole of Fetcham?

Yes. We work right across the KT22 side of the Mole, from The Street and The Old Street out to Hawk's Hill, The Ridgeway, Cock Lane and the roads towards Bookham Common. We are about 25 minutes away in Molesey and work across this part of Surrey regularly.

Can you get a cherry picker onto a Fetcham drive set behind a grass verge?

Usually, yes. We look at access when we quote, including verges, gates and overhanging trees, and plan where the machine will sit. If a spot is too tight, we will tell you honestly and suggest the best way round it.

Is steam cleaning suitable for older properties near St Mary's Church?

Low-pressure steam is about the gentlest effective method there is for old brick, stone and tiles. It uses heat rather than force or harsh chemicals. If your home is listed or in the conservation area, it is worth checking your own obligations, but the method itself is a sensible choice for older buildings.

Can you do several jobs in one visit?

Yes, and it often makes sense. A typical visit might be a roof steam clean and biocide treatment, then the gutters vacuumed out and the windows cleaned once the roof is done.
